About JMS Fitness

My background is in team sports and weight training. I graduated from Amherst College where I played basketball. My experience as a college athlete has been a great benefit to me as a personal trainer.

My personal training philosophy is simple. I believe the most effective fitness programs encourage slow, steady progress. Positive results should happen fast enough to keep you motivated, but not so fast that you risk injuring yourself. Improving your fitness level shouldn’t be a race, but rather a process of learning and gradual self improvement. Follow a well conceived program that progresses gradually, and chances are you'll accomplish more than you ever thought possible.

One of my goals as a personal trainer is to make my training style unique. For example, I use a trial and error approach to develop each client’s exercise program. This means that I regularly ask my clients for feedback. Then, if necessary, I replace an exercise they don’t like with something more enjoyable. After all, the world’s greatest workout isn’t worth much if it’s too unpleasant and difficult to stick with. Customizing workouts is important because every person is unique, and a program that is perfect for one client may be a poor fit for someone else.

Another unique aspect of my training approach is that I help clients to overcome the most common impediment to long term fitness success: lack of adherence. Effective strategies for sticking with an exercise plan can be, for some people, as important as the actual workouts. If a client has had difficulty following through on weight loss or exercise programs, I’m usually able to help them. Most of my clients who have achieved positive results (despite having struggled to get fit in the past) usually just needed a better game plan and some good coaching.

One more quality I bring to my training sessions is enthusiasm. I’m a natural cheerleader, and have found that positive encouragement is the best motivator. My demeanor is non-judgmental and all suggestions and instructions I give my clients are solution-based. There are plenty of obstacles on the road to fitness, but none that can’t be surmounted.
